At it's annual 'handover meeting', The Rotary Club of Biddulph elected Rtn. Martin Gravestock as its President for the year 2017/2018. . Outgoing President Rtn. Rob Lomas offered sincere thanks to Biddulph Rotary for 'insisting' that he be their President in 2016/17, adding that the experience is one he will never forget. Not only for the way in which the club has rallied behind him, but having to speak in public has helped him to develop his own confidence in this sphere. One experience Rtn. Rob said he would never get over - I mean forget - is when three intrepid Rotarians pushed a Sainsbury's (modified) shopping trolley from Biddulph to Llandudno, a distance of 91.19 miles.
A sometimes emotional outgoing President said that initially he never wanted to join Rotary, but, having done so, would forever treasure the memories created.
In closing, Rtn. Rob Lomas said he couldn't wait to take his turn as Sergeant-at-Arms, a privilege denied all incumbent Presidents. Now the fun can truly begin, it's payback time.....
LEND WITH CARE.
As part of its commitment to helping others, Biddulph Rotary Club entered into the "Lend with Care" scheme, a worldwide organisation which helps fledgling business-people get their ideas off the ground by giving small loans.
Having helped Almamito Pancho in the Phillipines, we then turned our attention to other worthy causes, and Biddulph Rotary has decided to support a Vietnamese farmer's wife, Mrs Ha Thi Ty. Mrs Ty helps her husband to run a small rice and corn farm, where they also raise a buffalo. Not only that, but she also fattens pigs for local traders. The club has lent £200, repayable over 24 months, this being the outstanding amount she required to buy seedlings and fertiliser.
At the club's monthly meeting on Monday 3rd of April 2017 Rtn Dr. John Clewlow reported that the loan repayments are up to date, with excellent feedback reported from loan recipients. To date Biddulph Rotary Club has 'Lent with Care' £800 to overseas fledgling businesses, giving them an opportunity to build a future for them, their families, and the community they live in.
